Forget the fact that he was the best coach who ever lived, and put aside that the man was a living saint, what I loved about John Wooden that has gone largely unreported was that he still referred to Kareem as "Lewis". Because he was so pure, and did not have a malicious bone in his body, he could call him "Lewis" and it did not seem like a dig, or a refusal to accept the new name or religion-it was just Wooden. Do you think anybody else could in 2010 call Kareem "Lewis" without it being a slight? No way, right?
