Times Have Changed

The Yankees have announced that Phil Hughes will skip his next start because they are concerned that he is pitching too many innings. The guy is on the roll of his life (10-1) and they are sitting him down. The babying of the modern arm is mind-boggling when compared to the recent past.

Consider Catfish Hunter. When the Yankees signed him as a free agent in 1975, he made 39 starts. He completed 30 of them. In fact, he was just 23 innings short of pitching every inning of every game he started that year.
